The Challenge - 11/27/2011

I thought for todays post I would share a list of blog's that I follow religiously.  We all need technical direction at times and this is a list of sites where you can get great information for free.  We've been traveling this weekend so I didn't have time to put a video together, but I should get to answering some of the questions that have been submitted tomorrow.  I'm excited to share this list with you though, I think you will find it a valuable resource.

Fashion Photography Blog - http://www.fashionphotographyblog.com/

  • This blog is really informative on the obvious, fashion.  It's a great insight into the world of fashion photography, with a lot of behind the scenes video and a lot of answers to why things were lit a certain way.  And if you can afford it, buy Melissa Rodwell's DVD, Fashion Photography Exposed or go to her workshop.  She has incredible work and definitely worth a look.

  • The innovator of the "one light" workshop.  Zack is a servant to the community of photographers.  He has a wealth of free information on lighting available on his web site.  And again if you can afford to go to one of his workshops or one of his short courses, I'm sure it would be money well spent.  My favorite technique that he has demonstrated on his blog is the white seamless tutorial.  Its a must read and a must try.  I used the technique to create this image:

  • David Hobby's website has a wealth of information on off camera strobes that would be useful to photographers of any skill level.  And if your feeling froggy you can go through the strobist boot camp program.  Its free and available online.  You could literally spend days on this blog digging through all of the tips and technique's.
Nick Onken Shop Talk - http://nickonken.com/blog/
  • Not a whole lot of technical information on this site, but Nick is a master of not lighting things.  He says that 90 percent of what you see on his site was shot with natural light.  Thats amazing considering the results that he comes away with.  I use this site for ideas and inspiration.  I like the directness with which he shoots.  This will show you what you can accomplish with a minimal amount of gear.
  • Jeremy is a world renowned photographer who started his career as a graphic designer and made the transition to photographer 6 or 7 years ago.  He shoots with a very strong "graphic style".  What I like most about Jeremy's work is his continued focus on social issues and injustices.  He uses his photography to expose and help.  He started the "Help Portrait" organization that does exactly that.  He asks photographers across the country and the globe to selflessly offer your time and work to the needy without self promotion.  He even asks you to not show the work at all, unless to solicit help for the next years endeavor.  What Jeremy has done with his career is what I strive to achieve.
I hope you find some value in this list that you can use in your own work or share with someone else.  I use these blogs as a constant resource of information and inspiration.  Thanks for reading and I'll see you tomorrow!
